Q4 Edge for Structured Finance

Q4 is when structured finance desks have the least time and the most to do. Rates have moved, the October new-issue calendar is crowded, credit is shifting sector by sector, and year-end client deliverables are coming due. The desks that come out ahead are the ones that spend their hours on decisions, not on assembling data.

Here is what traders, PMs and analysts across CMBS, RMBS, ABS and CLO are working through right now, and where automation earns its keep.

Five pressure points on the desk this quarter

1. Rates are moving and the pipeline is full

KBRA reports that private-label CMBS priced 19 deals totaling $13.3 billion in September, and that as many as 18 more could be announced in October across single-borrower, conduit, CRE CLO and Agency K-Series deals. It also cautions that the recent rise in rates could slow that pace (KBRA). Investors are heading into the month carefully after a rough September (GlobalCapital).

For a trader, that means more new paper to size up against existing holdings, on a shorter clock, while rate scenarios keep changing.

2. CRE CLO volume keeps climbing

CRE CLO issuance has reached $33.5 billion year-to-date, up 45% from the same point last year, according to KBRA. More deals means more collateral, more managers and more structures to compare.

3. Loan modifications and servicer actions change the math

Recent KBRA research has focused on loan modifications in SASB CMBS 2.0, servicer holdbacks and their effect on waterfalls, and rising CRE CLO defaults and modifications even as losses stay limited. These events rarely show up in a headline number. They show up in the cash flows, and only if you are watching each deal closely.

4. RMBS credit is normalizing, especially in non-prime

KBRA expects delinquencies to keep rising modestly across all RMBS sectors, with non-prime leading, as performance moves back from post-pandemic lows (KBRA). Spreads have stayed tight, which leaves less room for surprises in the collateral.

5. Office and consumer stress are still in play

Fitch’s 2026 outlook expected office, hotel and retail CMBS performance to weaken, and flagged lower-income and non-prime borrowers as vulnerable to a slowdown (ConnectCRE). That makes office-heavy CMBS and consumer ABS the obvious places to run harder stress tests.

And then there’s year-end reporting

On top of the market, Q4 brings quarterly and year-end client packages, portfolio stats for investment committees, and the scenario runs that support next year’s plans. On many desks that work still means pulling numbers from several systems, reconciling them by hand, and rebuilding the same spreadsheets every quarter.

Every hour spent on all that is an hour not spent on the new issue that prices tomorrow or the modification that just hit a deal you own.

Where Thetica Systems fits

Thetica Systems builds custom, automated workflows around how your desk already works, so the repetitive work runs on its own and your team’s judgment goes where it counts.

- Reports and client deliverables, automated. Quarterly and year-end packages, portfolio stats and custom reports are produced consistently, and they match Intex.

- Changes surfaced quickly. Delinquency trends, loan modifications, servicer actions and shifts in market direction are flagged across your portfolios, so you see what moved without hunting for it.

- Stress tests your way. Run tailored scenarios such as rate shocks, office and CRE stress, or non-prime credit deterioration, set up exactly as you define them.

- New issues against what you hold. Compare a new deal with your existing positions before it prices.

- One place for all your data. Licensed market data, other third-party sources and internal data are integrated so they work together.

- Results that match Intex. Thetica has been an Intex technology partner for more than 18 years.

Frequently asked questions

How can a structured finance desk automate client reports that match Intex?

Run the desk’s own report templates, calculations and scenarios on an automated workflow whose results reconcile to Intex. Thetica Systems builds these workflows for CMBS, RMBS, ABS and CLO desks, so quarterly and year-end deliverables come out consistent every time.

How do you run custom stress tests on a structured finance portfolio?

Define the scenarios that matter to your book, such as rate shocks, office and CRE stress, or rising non-prime delinquencies, and apply them the same way across every bond you hold. Automating them lets you rerun scenarios as conditions change instead of rebuilding them each time.

How can traders combine licensed market data with internal portfolio data?

Bring licensed market data, other third-party sources and internal holdings data into one integrated environment, so they can be analyzed and reported on together. Thetica Systems has built this kind of integration for structured finance clients since 2008.

What structured finance trends matter most for trading desks in Q4 2026?

The main ones are higher rates and a busy October CMBS and CRE CLO pipeline, continued growth in CRE CLO issuance, loan modifications and servicer actions in CMBS, modestly rising RMBS delinquencies led by non-prime, and ongoing office and consumer credit stress.
